Climbing

First-time climbers in Oman need to get used to the nature of the rock – most climbs are on fairly soft and brittle limestone that’s not always reliable. Rock that looks strong can easily flake and become detached when pulled too hard, so climbing in Oman is often more subtle than athletic, requiring balance and patience. The friction though is superb, and invites delicate moves using pressure and counter pressure.

Apart from the quality of the rock, Oman’s hot climate is another limiting factor and during the summer months of May to September the temperatures can reach 50ºC. For the dedicated climber it is possible to climb through the summer, if you pick your crag carefully. North-facing crags are usually in the shade in the afternoon. The usual climbing equipment will be sufficient, but you’ll have to bring your own gear as there are no dedicated shops in Oman selling it.

The Muscat Diving and Adventure Centre (listed opposite) can supply you with equipment and also guide you to the best climbs.
