Shipping

Sending purchases abroad can be a tedious business but there are many shipping and cargo agencies that make it easier. Items can be sent by sea freight (the least expensive option), air freight or courier. You’ll find companies that offer this service under ‘Courier Services,’ ‘Cargo Services’ or ‘Shipping Companies’in the Omantel telephone directory or in the newspapers’ classified ads. Most airlines also have a cargo service division, but your chosen destination may not necessarily be on their list of routes. When buying carpets or furniture, some shops may arrange shipping for you. You should always ask what this will cost first – that antique wooden chest may not seem like such a bargain after adding in the shipping costs. Shops will sometimes issue a certificate stating that the item is worth less than it is to save you money on import duty. This is highly illegal, of course, but they seem to have no qualms about doing it.
