Relax and unwind at a spa resort nestled in the Italian countryside

In a nutshell: A Tuscan hideaway where your stresses will be washed away in thermal pools, and your senses will be healed and soothed with holistic spa treatments

Where: Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, just 40 miles south of Siena and around two hours’ drive from Rome and Pisa airports, this modern spa is the perfect place to escape – everything. Wander casually or cycle around the extensive grounds, breath in the fresh air and take in the 180-degree views of rolling green hills, olive farms and vineyards, or venture outside (if you have the energy or time) to visit the Medieval hill towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino.

Now booking: There are around 80 rooms, all located within the two wings off the resort’s main villa, and each with a balcony or terrace overlooking the Orca valley – if there was ever a reason to get out of bed it was to watch the sun rise right here. The resort’s inner calm extends into the rooms, where the large comfy beds, roomy en suite with luxury products, and floor to ceiling windows help to unruffle anyone’s feathers. And, with a choice of doubles and family suites, there literally is room for everyone.

Atmosphere: This heavenly retreat has been designed to revitalise and reinvigorate, and a steaming thermal pool with cascading waterfall at the heart of the resort sets the perfect scene. Forget the world at large as soon as you wrap yourself up in your fluffy bathrobe, the essential apparel for wandering between thermal pools, indoor pools, grottos, saunas, ice caves and steam rooms. Noise levels are low, movements are slow, there’s a ‘chill’ in the air (and we’re not talking temperature), and brows are quickly unfurrowed.

Amenities: Whether you want the relaxed atmosphere of the outdoor and indoor thermal pools, where you can luxuriate in the healing mineral-rich warm waters, or to work out on the aqua bikes in the cooler lap pool, the facilities here encourage you to do as much or as little as you please. Enjoy the Wild River channel in the freshwater sports pool, where a strong current creates the feeling of a flowing river, or simply unwind in the zero gravity chairs, or work up a sweat in the grottos and saunas dotted around the resort. You can rent mountain or electric bike to explore the grounds and beyond, or simply head straight to the spa, which caters for every imaginable need.

Kids club: For the ultimate break, drop the kids off at this resort’s fantastic kids club, which hosts a daily programme of activities and serves healthy meals throughout the day. Or simply let them burn off steam in the kids’ pool with slide.
Food & drink: The healthy nature of this resort extends to the menu – and who knew that eating well could taste so good! There’s a choice of dining in the villa’s atrium, which has a retractable glass roof, or the alfresco poolside restaurant, both of which serve nutritious dishes packed with the flavour of fresh, local ingredients. Lunch is traditionally Italian with a salad bar like no other, followed by homemade pasta and grilled meats and fish; wind up the day with a seven-course dinner serving exquisite dishes such as wild boar and Tuscan bean stew. And, if you feel peckish between that, a delicious afternoon tea is served on the balcony.

Who’s staying: The welcome mat is rolled out for a diverse mix of guests, from honeymoon couples to well-behaved families. And, despite the sheer indulgence of it all, Adler replaces the snobbiness of some spa resorts with a wonderful homely, friendly feel that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
