Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge

Project Background

The renowned Desert Challenge, held each year in Abu Dhabi, is one of the toughest off-road races in the world where drivers contend with soaring desert heat and challenging terrain. In collaboration with the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, Explorer's experienced cartographers and professional designers have produced printed spectators' maps outlining all the different routes and stopping points across the Western Region’s desert for six years, including a special edition for its 25th anniversary in 2015, shareable graphics of individual stages for social media, and wall maps for the organisers. Depicting local towns, resorts, dune gradients, varying landscapes and signs in a fold-out map, the programme also features the entrants in various categories, previous winners and other essential information.

Creative Approach

Explorer’s design ensured a balance of functionality and visual appeal. A fold-out booklet provided stage details, entrant lists, and spectator information. Posters and social media graphics showcased race routes, stage highlights, and key locations. A cohesive design using vibrant colors and clean layouts unified all materials.

Mapping Approach

Using the client’s GIS data, Explorer plotted race routes on regional base maps, highlighting each stage with distinct colors. Landmarks, terrain gradients, refueling points and spectator zones were clearly marked. Accuracy and readability were prioritised, ensuring the maps met the logistical needs of competitors and organisers while maintaining a user-friendly design. Explorer’s expertise in cartography and design delivered precise, engaging materials that captured the spirit and complexity of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge.
