Abu Dhabi Tourist Maps
Explorer's cartographers and designers worked closely with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism to produce handy tourist maps of the emirate's three regions: Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. Using bold colours and illustrated icons, these maps are as unique as the Emirate’s culture. All three maps were produced in print and online interactive editions in seven different languages.

Editorial Strategy
While our English editorial team created descriptions of each of the points of interest highlighted on the maps, along with important information about each region, the main editorial challenge of this project was the translation. Required in five languages in addition to English and Arabic, Explorer's senior editor reached out to our vast network of freelance language specialists to ensure we provided a quality translation in Chinese, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish – the top languages spoken by visitors to Abu Dhabi aside from Arabic and English.
Creative Approach
To really make these maps stand out, our creative director developed a concept that employed bold, highly saturated colours and unique illustrated icons. Each region was assigned a dominant colour – blue for Abu Dhabi city, green for Al Ain and orange for Al Dhafra – so that the maps complemented each other but were easy to tell apart. The modern and slightly funky designed ensured tourists would pick up these maps and keep them as a souvenir from their trip to the emirate, even if they didn't necessarily use them to navigate.
Carto Strategy
Although illustrated tourist maps may not require the same pinpoint detailed that a road atlas demands, accuracy is still paramount. Our cartography team utilised the latest mapping data and satellite imagery of Abu Dhabi to ensure all boundaries, major roads, towns and points of interest were represented accurately. They also sourced and quality checked all official map labels in Arabic and English before they were translated into the remaining languages.
