Dreams of the Sea

Project Background

From a modest fishing and pearling centre to an international trade hub and tourist destination, Dubai is unprecedented in its evolution. Global marine terminal operator, DP World, partnered with Explorer to collect the stories of people involved in Dubai and the UAE’s maritime history for Dreams of the Sea: The Dubai Maritime History Project.

Creative Approach

"Explorer designed the luxuriously finished commemorative book, Dreams of the Sea, published in Arabic and English, which illustrated the memories and anecdotes of Dubai’s seafarers with stunning photography.

The dedicated bilingual website mirrored the look and feel of its handsome print counterpart, while serving as an interactive living archive of videos, photos and memories that celebrate the city’s timeless relationship with the sea."

Editorial Strategy

Explorer’s editorial team penned fascinating first-hand accounts from the founders of modern Dubai, and held outreach events to gather more stories, images and anecdotes of scores of people who lived through those formative years. The Dreams of the Sea book retraces routes of the naval explorers and boat-builders of yesteryear to the success of the emirate today, as a leading shipping destination. From fishermen and pearl divers to dhow builders, traders and port construction workers, these witness accounts tell of a rich, fascinating and dynamically alive maritime history.
