Expo 2020 Dubai Theme Week Insights

Project Background

The Programme for People and Planet was an event series that ran throughout the six months of Expo 2020 Dubai. It comprised 10 theme weeks which addressed the most pressing challenges we face as a world today. Explorer was chosen to create a box set of 10 thematic journals to act as a record of the astonishing array of events that attracted some of the world’s most impactful thought leaders and changemakers.

Editorial Strategy

A comprehensive master content plan was developed which all 10 journals would follow, and then individual content plans were populated based on the agendas of each theme week. Explorer's editorial team spent the six months of Expo 2020 attending events and watching back recorded sessions to gain a solid understanding of the complex issues, ideas and topics at hand. Our editors produced academic-level opinion pieces, in-depth articles, profiles and interviews based on the approved content plans, which themselves were adapted as needed to reflect the reality of the discussions, insights and events that took place during each theme week.

Creative Approach

Taking inspiration from National Geographic-style publications, the brief was to produce journals rich with impactful imagery that reflected Expo's global reach and impact. Explorer's team shot original photography throughout the 10 theme weeks, and carefully selected imagery from Expo's library and other third-party sources that both enhanced and supported the editorial content. Each publication also includes colourful illustrations which break up the content and make the journals as visually appealing as they are thought provoking.
