New Developments
Berlin saw a massive wave of new development and building in the 1990s following reunification. Potsdamer Platz, long a barren no-man’s land near the Wall, was the largest construction site in Europe for several years and it’s now a shiny and bustling district at the heart of the city. Many new structures, including the massive Chancellery near the Reichstag, were built in Mitte prior to the federal government’s move to Berlin in 1999. The huge new central train station, Hauptbahnhof, opened nearby in 2006. But there are still other big infrastructure projects in the works. Most important for the region is the long-delayed Berlin-Brandenburg International airport on the site of Schönefeld Airport on the city’s south-east border. The project is currently expected to be finished in 2011. The deep-pocketed US developer Anschutz Entertainment Group is also building a 17,000 seat stadium in eastern Berlin near the Ostbahnhof. The state-of-the-art arena is intended to anchor an entirely new neighbourhood with shopping and offices near the Spree River.
