Emboldened by its growing clout on the international scene since reunification, Germany is now pushing for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. It has a good case to make as the organisation’s third-largest donor and Europe’s biggest nation, but with two European countries already designated permanent members (the UK and France), not to mention Russia, Berlin isn’t likely to be joining the big league anytime soon.
