Most insurance companies will require a police report to file a claim for a car accident. Berlin police officers will tell you you’re not obliged to offer details that could incriminate you – however, once they’re on the scene they will make a cursory decision on which driver was at fault. If you’re not happy with their assessment you’ll have to fight it in court. If you decide against calling the police, you should, at the very least, take the telephone number, insurance information and registration number of the other party to pass on to your insurance company.
