Special Needs Education

Unless your child has severe learning disabilities, the best place to get help for them is their school. The government has set aside extensive resources to provide help for kids with learning disorders but be prepared for a lengthy process – you’ll need to have your child tested by at least one expert and then join with the school to get help from the Berlin government. However, since you’re unlikely to be the first to face difficulties, the school may recommend a nearby institution that already has the appropriate infrastructure.

If your German is good enough, the local government can help diagnose and find help for those with learning disorders. Start with the Jugendamt in your district (search at www.berlin.de for Jugendamt and your district). It can offer advice, counselling or even just tutoring to help keep children up to speed with their peers.

If your child is severely disabled, the city can offer plenty of assistance. Check in with your Jugendamt to find out all the options, which range from special schools to assisted living facilities. Most are linked with one of the city’s universities, which adds an extra layer of care and education. It’s vital you find out what’s on offer since home schooling is illegal in Germany.
