Roommates

If you don’t feel like or can’t afford living alone, Germans are enthusiastic about having roommates. Newspapers are full of ads for WGs, which is short for Wohngemeinschaft, a flat with a room to let. It’s also a good idea to check expat sites or the bulletin boards at your school or work to find someone a little more compatible. Living with a roommate or mates is actually considered an integral part of German culture and some choose to live in such circumstances their entire life. Because it’s so common, don’t be afraid to speak up about any concerns you might have once you’ve moved in – everyone is used to dealing with inter-apartment strife. You may also be asked to attend apartment meetings. Attendance is a good idea if you want to keep on everyone’s good side.
