The system for paying bills in Berlin is based on either you transferring the funds to your creditor’s account or allowing them to deduct the amount directly from your account. It’s understandable that a foreigner would have reservations about giving someone access to their accounts, so if you do, just opt for the transfer option – it may cost you €1 a month but that’s not much for peace of mind. If even transferring seems absurd, you can go to a branch of your creditor’s bank and pay the bill – for a fee of several euros. The bank will be listed on the form used to transfer money.
