Sharjah Light Festival Coffee Table Book

Project Background

During the annual Sharjah Light Festival, a selection of talented international and local artists, plus outdoor event specialists, treat the urban landscape of Sharjah's public spaces as a unique canvas, creating a series of enlightening visual effects, illuminations and projections. In tandem with Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Explorer created a coffee table book showcasing this unique spectacle for two years running to shed light on the emirate's rich history and culture.

Editorial Strategy

To accompany the photography, Explorer's editors wrote brief but informative captions in English highlighting the artists whose work was featured in the festival and explaining the significance of the buildings upon which the art was projected. The text was first written in English and then translated into Arabic.

Creative Approach

The biggest challenge this project posed was the logistics of photographing the incredible projections at locations all over Sharjah. In addition to our in-house photography team, we also contracted freelance photographers to ensure we had enough boots on the ground to cover the entire event. Explorer's photography manager devised a meticulous plan and managed the entire team of photographers throughout the event, ensuring everyone was where they needed to be and that we were capturing all the imagery we needed. After the festival, our creative director used the images as inspiration for the coffee table book's layout, creating a design that offset the vibrant light projects with stark black or white backgrounds that allowed the art to speak for itself.
