Design collaborations with stars such as Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els and Ian Baker-Finch have helped cement Dubai as a world-class golf destination. Several of the game’s biggest events are hosted here, including the annual Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club, and the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

For amateur enthusiasts there are local monthly tournaments and annual competitions open to all such as the Emirates Mixed Amateur Open, the Emirates Ladies’ Amateur Open (handicap of 21 or less), and the Emirates Men’s Amateur Open (handicap of five or less).

To get your official handicap in the UAE, register with Emirates Golf Federation and submit three score cards. You will then be issued with a member card and handicap card enabling you to enter competitions.

If you don’t want to join a golf club – the fees are pretty steep – you can join an amateur golf society such as the Kegs or Dubai Divots, or start one yourself as large groups can often get concessionary rates. Dubai Golf operates a central reservation system for those wishing to book a round of golf on any of the major courses in the emirate.
