Wildlife Centres

While Dubai Zoo may not be the best facility in the world, there are several places beyond the city limits that are worth a visit for animal lovers.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, a stopping off point for thousands of migrating birds each year, including about 1,500 flamingos. There are a number of hides from where to view the action: one beside Ras Al Khor Road, and two off Oud Metha Road (wildlife.ae, 04 606 6822/26).

Sharjah also has several places to get up close to birds, beasts and fish: it has its own aquarium; plus Arabia’s Wildlife Centre and Children’s Farm; and Al Tamimi Stables, with pony rides, nature trails, a petting farm, equestrian and falconry shows. See Out of the City for more information on these.

Further afield, Al Ain Zoo contains excellent facilities for an impressive range of animals from around the globe, including rare breeds like the white lion, or there’s Emirates Park Zoo in Abu Dhabi, which lets you get pretty close to a lot of the animals.
