Environmental Organisations

The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, part of the Shanghai Municipality, is the body responsible for formulating the city’s environmental protection plans, monitoring pollution and enforcing environmental laws. It also manages natural resources and ecosystems such as the Chongming Island wetlands. Of the thousands of non-governmental organisations proliferating in China now, a number are based in Shanghai and tackle environmental issues. Among them is Roots & Shoots, part of the international Jane Goodall Institute and the first foreign NGO registered by the government. It encourages young people to enrol in environmental projects and welcomes adult volunteers. Projects include tree planting, organic gardening, and paper and printer ink cartridge recycling, carried out in conjunction with local and international schools.
