Finding A Home

Most foreigners find apartments through agents. If your budget is lower than ¥7,500 a month, you should work with a local real estate company to help you find something suitable. There are agencies on practically every city block; look for the apartment photos and profiles lining the windows. Most of these smaller operations only represent real estate in their neighbourhood, so pick the area in which you’d like to look and walk into any agency. Many are franchised and the service is standard throughout. It’s best to bring a Chinese speaking friend since most local agents don’t speak English, however. Agencies that cater specifically to expatriates with budgets larger than ¥7,500 abound and generally include an English-speaking service. Some of the most reputable ones are listed in the table below.

Besides agencies, there are plenty of resources for people looking to rent or share a flat. Sharing an apartment is common among younger expats in Shanghai and most of the listings mentioned below have a ‘roommates wanted’ section. While many new arrivals can afford their own place, sharing rent is a good way to save money as well as meet new people and perhaps learn from a more seasoned expat.

Alternatively, some foreigners choose to live with locals – an excellent language and cultural opportunity. Check for property or roommate listings in that’s Shanghai or City Weekend magazines. Online, you can find property listings on www.shanghai.craigslist.org, www.enjoyclassifieds.com, www.adweekly.cn, www.cityweekend.com.cn and www.shanghai.asiaxpat.com.
