Environment

In recent years, the determined clamour of environmentally conscious campaigners and groups has begun to make an impact in a country where concepts like carbon-offsetting, recycling and re-using are still nascent. In 1998, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, then Crown Prince of Dubai, established an environmental award which recognises an individual or organisation for work carried out on behalf of the environment.

At an everyday level, there are increasing numbers of glass, plastic and paper recycling points around the city, mainly around shopping centres. However, overall, little seems to be done to persuade the average citizen to be more environmentally active, for instance by encouraging the reduction of littering. If you want to take action, there are a couple of groups, including Emirates Environmental Group, who always need volunteers and funds.
