Having A Baby
Maternity leave
Maternity leave is paltry: just 45 days paid leave, and no paternity leave. You can take another month unpaid, provided your employer agrees. If you need extra time for medical reasons, you can take up to 100 days, although this is only granted upon production of a medical certificate from your doctor.
Support network
In the absence of the family support network you may have had back home, there are, fortunately, strong networks of other parents who meet up regularly and offer plenty of help to each other; for example, see dubaimums.com and expatwoman.com.
Bear in mind that once the baby's born, you'll have a fair bit of red tape to tackle, and many of the following processes need to be completed within a specific time frame. The next steps are to:
- Apply for a UAE birth certificate.
- Register the birth with your home country.
- Apply for a birth certificate from your home country.
- Apply for a passport for your newborn.
- Apply for a residence visa for your newborn.
