Markets

This may be a city of towering skyrises and high-tech gadgets, but it hasn’t lost its traditional charm. Markets appear every weekend, and some – like Ameyoko – are permanently set up. Flea and antique markets are most common, and some beautiful traditional treasures – such as artwork, ceramics and kimono – can be found at these spots. The vibe is relaxed and you are welcome to browse without being pestered to make a purchase. If you do want to buy, bargaining is acceptable, but there are no real set standards and some places may be unwilling to budge on their marked price. The whole process is done rather politely, with none of the theatrics seen in other parts of the world. Makeshift markets normally start at dawn and run until mid afternoon. Shops within permanent markets tend to open from around 09:00 and close sometime between 17:00 and 19:00.
