Although not weekly occurrences, there are some great rides that take place from time to time that help relieve the tedium of repeating the same laps and loops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. All the main groups organise trips to Hatta, for example, where one great ride heads out from Hatta Fort Hotel and across the Hajars to Kalba. It’s beautiful but difficult terrain with some serious climbing involved. To Kalba and back is around 105km with more than 2,000m of climbing; however, you can obviously turn around before Kalba (usually after the first or second tunnel on the S116 Sharjah-Kalba Rd).

Dubai Roadsters have recently started running another equally hilly route that tackles part of the new Dubai to Fujairah highway, but the group’s best-known (and hardest) challenge is the twice-a-year 220km coast-to-coast ride that crosses the Hajars between Dubai and Fujairah.

Finally, for those who are real gluttons for punishment, there’s Jebel Hafeet (map 8) in Al Ain. It may have been named one of the world’s greatest driving roads, but it’s a painful challenge for cyclists. Park at the top and enjoy the fast descent to Green Mubazzarah; then you simply don’t have the choice but to turn back around. The 12km road climbs more than 1,200m through 21 switchbacks. It’s hard work but rewarding.
