Where To Go

Local groups are very active in organising MTB race events but without any fixed schedule. They tend to take place during the cooler winter months. Subscribe to the various newsletters and Facebook pages, and keep an eye on premiermarathons.com, from where you can enter most races.

Another event worth checking out is the annual Wadi Bih Adventure Race (wadiadventure.com) which is a multi-discipline (MTB/mountain run) race set in the dramatic and stunning Hajar Mountains near Dibba (Musandam) for individuals and teams of two people. There is also a separate MTB hill climb race held for those who only want to cycle.

For roadies, CycleSafe and Revolution Cycles have been instrumental in creating a number of great races throughout the year, with December’s Dubai 92 (a 92km race through Dubai) preceded by a series of time trial style events between September and December. They also organise a number of criterium races (essentially, do the most laps you can in a given time) at Dubai Autodrome.

Probike organises a series of time trials over distances ranging from 10km to 40km (with some team TTs too), at a course in Academic City, while Yas Marina Circuit has recently chipped in with a couple of races.

For information on all bike racing in the UAE, keep your eyes on premiertiming.com, which has a full calendar of events and is also where you can enter.

At the other end of the spectrum, of course, is February’s Tour of Oman. Coming early in the European cycling season, many of the top teams in pro cycling send some of their biggest stars over to the Sultanate to gain some early season fitness; for fans of cycling, it’s essential viewing.
