Crime

While crime figures aren’t officially released, the UAE is known for having a low crime rate. Serious crimes like rape and murder are infrequent and unlikely to affect the quality of life of the average expat. Around 80% of crimes happen within the expat communities living within work camps. There have been advertising campaigns in recent times warning of cash point robberies; when withdrawing cash from a machine, keep your guard up and be aware of anyone watching on.

The most common reason for expats getting on the wrong side of the law is often alcohol. In the UAE there is a zero-tolerance policy on drinking and driving; if you are arrested for this, the usual penalty is a minimum 30 days in prison. Being drunk and disorderly in public is also something that can land you in trouble.

Should you be in any altercation, it pays to keep your calm; obscene gestures or profane language, even on the phone, are bad news. Physically or verbally abuse anyone so that it causes them harm, and you may end up in prison, unless the victim chooses to drop the charges. This includes when you’re behind the wheel of a car too, so keep your road rage well in check.

If you need to contact the Abu Dhabi police call 999. For ambulance, call 998 or 999 and for the fire department call 997.
