Recycling
Taking out the trash can be a daunting and bewildering experience for new arrivals from less environmentally aware places. Berliners typically separate their rubbish into four piles: paper, glass, other recyclables (put in a special yellow bin called a Gelbe Tonne) and everything else. Occasionally, this is supplemented by an organic compost bin. Transgressions are not taken lightly. If you put the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin, your entire apartment building might be punished by having its recycling bins taken away for a period of time.
