The Spree isn’t exactly one of the world’s mighty rivers, but Berliners still get plenty of use out of it. The river is primarily plied by tourist boats and cargo barges, along with the occasional pleasure craft. A Dampferfahrt on one of the open-top tour boats (see www.sternundkreis.de or www.reedereiwinkler.de) is a great way to see the heart of the city – you can even take a loop all the way from Schloss Charlottenburg through the hypermodern government quarter and into parts of Kreuzberg.

The Havel waterway to the west of the city is essentially a large lake for Berliners, who pack it full of sailing boats and motorised craft during the summer months. There are also a few very limited public ferry lines on the Havel and Spree – check the BVG website for details (www.bvg.de).
