Abu Dhabi Road Network
Three bridges
Abu Dhabi island is linked to the mainland by three bridges with each holding one of the three main roads into and out of the city; Mussafah Bridge sees Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street at the south side; Al Maqtaa Bridge holds Airport Road (2nd Street) that runs through the middle of the city and is one of the most well-used roads in the capital; and the Sheikh Zayed Bridge carries Al Salam Street to the north. In addition, the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge and Expressway provide an alternative route to and from the city through Saadiyat and Yas islands, bypassing the middle of Abu Dhabi island and making access to the airport easier.
Street names
What can make things difficult, and is likely to continue happening even after the new system is in place, is the referral to roads by their colloquial names. For example, Sheikh Zayed the First Street is also known as Seventh Street, but the eastern section is called Electra Street. Other confusing street names include: Al Bateen Street (officially Hazaa Bin Zayed The First Street); Coast Road (Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street); New Airport Road (East Street); Nadja Street (Bani Yas Street); Eastern Ring Road (Al Salam Street); Defence Road (Hazaa Bin Zayed The First Street); Old Airport Road (Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street) and Khalidiyah Street (Sultan Bin Zayed Street).
