Accommodation

Mitte is the most densely urban part of Berlin, and living here best suits those who savour the cultural and entertainment attractions of fast-paced city life. Luxury flats and newly built condominiums predominate around Pariser Platz, Gendarmenmarkt, Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse. The Scheunenviertel area, more than any other part of Mitte, has the feel of a residential neighbourhood, especially on quieter side streets such as Sophienstrasse. Flats available here, many of them owner-occupied, tend to be restored Altbau with elegant touches such as stucco ceiling mouldings. At an average rent of almost €9 per square metre, Mitte is one of Berlin’s priciest areas, and those on a budget will probably find better luck elsewhere. Apartment purchase costs an average €2,300 per square metre. The one attraction Mitte does not have is an abundance of green space; on a perhaps related note, significantly fewer children seem to live here than in the surrounding districts.
