Shopping & Amenities

No other part of Berlin offers more shopping. Potsdamer Platz and Alexanderplatz hold massive shopping malls (Arkaden and Alexa) with big international chains. Friedrichstrasse, packed with high-fashion boutiques, has wrestled from Ku’damm the claim to Berlin’s glitziest shopping. One of Mitte’s most charming features is the abundance of shop-lined Höfe (back courtyards) in the area around Hackescher Markt. The shops here display all things stylish: designer clothing, shoes and furniture; hair salons; design-oriented gifts and household goods. Areas of Mitte near the Prenzlauer Berg border are most convenient for supermarkets and fruit and vegetable shops, which can be scarce elsewhere in the district. An open-air market is held on Saturdays and Sundays on Museum Island. One of Mitte’s few green spaces, the riverside Monbijou Park, has a pleasant view of Museum Island.
