Eating & Drinking

Mitte boasts the most sophisticated bar scene in Berlin, and its dining scene is catching up. The Scheunenviertel is filling with tasteful, high-quality restaurants that cater to residents and gallery-hoppers. But on nearby Oranienburger Strasse, bombastic tourist traps try to lure in the unwitting with tiki torches, touts and suspect cocktail specials; those who succumb find highly Germanised Indian food and hidden service charges. The area around Veteranenstrasse and at the foot of Kastanienallee is best for offbeat cafes and laid-back bars such as Weinerei. Slick cocktail bars alternate with flashy tour-group-attracting pubs in the area around Hackescher Markt. Mitte holds some of Berlin’s more prominent clubs, such as Weekend on Alexanderplatz and Cookies on Friedrichstrasse.
