Shopping & Amenities
One of Steglitz’s main draws is its range of shopping options. On Schloßstrasse there are two major shopping centres. One of these, the glitzy mall Das Schloß, projects images of the sun, a starry night sky and the deep sea onto its ceiling. The other is Schloss-Strassen-Center (030 886 22 950, www.schloss-strassen-center.de).
Besides the big malls, Schloßstrasse has bookstores, supermarkets, clothing boutiques and pretty much everything else – except perhaps quirky knick-knacks, which you can find instead at the weekly market at Rathaus Steglitz. The market, one of Berlin’s most beloved, sells flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. Steglitz offers fabulous riches in terms of parks: there’s the Stadtpark Steglitz, site of frequent musical performances in summer; the Glienicker Landschaftspark, a Unesco World Heritage Site; the botanical garden, Germany’s largest; and the Teltow Canal, with its popular cycling and jogging trails. The lakes of south-west Berlin are also close at hand.
