Gas

There’s no mains gas in Dubai, and individual gas canisters need to be purchased and attached to cookers. There are gas suppliers that will deliver the canisters and connect up the supply. Supply companies tend to slip stickers or flyers under doors on a regular basis and they’re all essentially the same in terms of both service and price. A few of the largest companies include Al Fahidi Gas (04 351 6452), Oasis Gas (04 396 1812) and New City Gas (04 351 8282).

Gas bottles come in three sizes: most houses use the medium size, the small are better in apartments and the large are really only for industrial use – they are enormous. The canisters initially cost around Dhs.350 and refills are usually Dhs.75 (keep your receipt so that you can get some of your deposit back). There is usually a gas van operating around each area at all times; chances are that if you run out of gas in the middle of cooking your chips, one call to your local gas man and he can be with you in less than 20 minutes.
