Postal Services

Previously, there was no postal delivery service to home addresses, and everyone had their mail delivered to a PO Box. In January 2012, Empost rolled out a new system that more closely resembles the traditional postal services in western countries.

If you live in a villa, you can sign up to the My Home service which will see post delivered direct to your home three times a week – or six for an additional payment. My Building is the option for apartment residents, with post delivered to a PO Box in the lobby or basement. My Box sees your mail delivered to a PO Box at a post office, and finally there’s My Zone, where post is delivered to local shelters that contain a large number of boxes, with the idea that you get a box close to your place of work or home. Visit empostuae.com for more details and rates. Alternatively, many people have personal mail delivered to their company’s PO Box; this traditional method still works and, for many, may be the best option.

Letters and packages do occasionally go missing and, if the item has not been registered, there’s little that you can do apart from wait – some turn up months after they are expected, although this happens less and less frequently.

SENDING GIFTS Home If you would rather not chance the post, Gift Express provides a selection of gifts that can be sent to most countries. (giftexpressinternational.com).

Empost offers a courier service, while registered mail is a relatively inexpensive alternative and can be tracked via a reference number. The major international courier services also deliver and have a presence in Dubai, including DHL (04 299 5333), FedEx (04 218 3860), UPS (800 4774) and Aramex (600 544 000). If you’re expecting a package, ensure the person sending it has included your phone number, as that is often the only way for the courier to find your location.
