ID Card
Upon receiving a visa, all foreigners must register with their local municipal office and apply for a Certificate of Alien Registration (gaikokujin torokushō). This ID card, issued by the Ministry of Justice, lists your name, nationality, birthday, address, occupation and visa status and must be carried at all times. You are not legally required to show it to anyone other than government or law enforcement personnel, though you may be asked to show it in hotels, video rental shops, health clubs, and any other business that requires a photo ID. To replace, renew or update your gaijin card, visit your local ward, city office or police station.
