Housing

Tokyo is no longer just the domain of small apartments. New buildings and housing options appear weekly, and the face of Tokyo living is changing rapidly. The size/price ratio of an average apartment might be shocking at first, but with a bit of planning you can easily find something to suit your needs, whether you’re a student looking for a cheap room or a family seeking a luxury apartment. Renting is the most popular short-term option but if you are planning a family or want to stay a while, buying a house or an apartment might be a better bet. Location is everything but the huge availability means you’re sure to find something good.

Choosing a place to live can seem like an overwhelming task. There are so many areas to choose from, and depending on your situation many factors can come into play. If you have a limited budget, then Ginza will not be for you. Do you have a family? If so, then you might want to check out Meguro-ku or Setagaya-ku. If you’re younger or single, it might be important to you to maintain your social life by sticking to areas with lots of entertainment options like Azabu or Shibuya. If your job is in Nihonbashi, then neighbourhoods in Chiyoda-ku might be convenient. If you’re looking for a truly Japanese living experience you might want to look outside these areas too.
