Exporting and Imoprting A Vehicle
Provided you have owned and used a car for more than a year, you can import it duty free. You will need proof of ownership, including the local registration, licence number and Vehicle Identification Number, as well as a Japan Customs Declaration.
Exporting a car is also possible. Make sure you are aware of the requirements in the country you are exporting to. Most countries require you to have owned the car for at least a year if not two before exporting it. Exporting to the US is not advisable, unless the car originated there and you have all the documentation to prove it.
Companies that can help you with exporting include Gaijin Inc (if you purchase through them) and A-CROSS (03 5449 7621, www.a-cross.jp), who can help you with both import and export. A-CROSS mainly deal in relocation and will export cars only as a part of a relocation package.
