Donor Cards

Germany’s very tight organ donation regulations are designed to ensure that only willing donors provide organs and tissue for transplants. The organ donor card (Organspendeausweis) is the most vital document and is available at the offices of most doctors and pharmacies, or from the German Federal Centre of Health Education at www.bzga.de. Since there is no central registry of voluntary donors, a wallet-sized donor card is available and must be kept either in a wallet or purse. A full-page version could be stored at home with other important papers, such as wills. Friends and family should also know about your desire to donate your organs. If no organ donor card can be found and you’ve been in an accident that renders you unable to communicate, your family would only be able to donate your organs if they could convince the authorities that you had previously expressed such interest.
