Education

Kreuzberg education has been under heavy media scrutiny since Mayor Klaus Wowereit quipped in 2006 that he wouldn’t want to send his children to a Kreuzberg school. Ethnic segregation is at the heart of the debate: critics say that in schools where the vast majority of pupils come from non-German families and don’t speak German at home the children pass through the school system without ever learning to speak or write proper German. However, there are bright spots in the Kreuzberg school system, such as the Heinrich-Zille-Grundschule (030 2250 3611, www.heinrich-zille-grundschule.de), which has been lauded as Europe’s best integration school. Still, Kreuzberg parents have been known to falsify their residential registration in order to send their children to schools in other districts.
