Education
With the flood of babies has come a serious crunch for Prenzlauer Berg Kitas (nursery schools) and primary schools. Pregnant women regularly place their unborn children on multiple waiting lists in the hope of snagging a place by the time the child is 2. The lack of sufficient space at well-regarded neighbourhood schools such as the Thomas-Mann-Grundschule (030 445 7761, www.thomas-mann-grundschule.de) has even prompted demonstrations on Kollwitzplatz. Children who lose out in the lottery that awards primary school slots are sent to schools further afield – generally eastward, among Plattenbauten, where old-school East German teaching methods strike fear into the hearts of progressive, artistic parents. A few international nursery schools have cropped up in Prenzlauer Berg, including the Berlin Kids International Kita (www.berlin-kids-international.de) and the Zebra Kita (www.zebrakita.de).
