Accommodation

Accommodation is unusually cheap in Wedding, in part because so many Altbau buildings remain untouched. Large-scale renovations are just beginning, and the first new townhouses are appearing on the banks of the canal. More than anywhere else in Berlin, this is where you can still find the Ofenheizung (oven-heated) apartments that were the norm in decades past. You can buy as well as rent flats at bargain-basement prices. The area around Nauener Platz and the section of Koloniestrasse between Osloer Strasse and Soldiner Strasse draw the most artists and new arrivals. Beware that some residential areas of Wedding lie under the flight path of planes landing at Tegel airport. The average rent in Wedding is a very low €4.79 per square metre. Apartments cost an average €1,000 per square metre to buy.
