Traffic Rules & Regulations
Speed limits are between 40 and 60kph within the city, while the highway and inner rings allow speeds of up to 80kph. Speed signs are identifiable by their black digits within red circles. Drivers are most often fined for traffic irregularities, such as running a red light. Main intersections have speed cameras recording your every move, and any illegal activity will be fined and sent to the address that the car is registered under. If you don’t pay on time, you will have to pay at your annual car inspection. Luckily, there are no late fees. If the cameras don’t get you, traffic cops with radars could be waiting at intersections and will fine you immediately. Although there are formal traffic laws that give the illusion of lane protocol, the attitude on the streets is that of ‘anything goes’. Overtaking on the right is a common phenomenon although technically prohibited, and drivers never hesitate to make right-hand turns on red lights even if pedestrians are trying to cross.
