Scooters are incredibly popular as they are cheap and a quick and convenient way to get around. You can drive a 49cc bike (gentsuki) on a moped licence (available from age 16) or a standard driving licence (Japanese or IDL). For small (50-124cc), mid-size (125-400cc) and large bikes, you need a special licence. If you go through a driving school, expect to pay at least ¥100,000.
