Other Rental Costs

Utilities are usually provided but you are expected to set up an account in your own name. Forms from the electric, gas, and water companies can be found either in your apartment or house, or in your mailbox. Most leases include a monthly maintenance fee added on to or included with the rent. This covers the upkeep of common areas such as the lobby, stairwells, elevators, and hallways. Some upmarket apartment buildings may also have parking, swimming pool, gym and maintenance fees. If you have a garden, there may be an extra maintenance fee. Basic maintenance costs such as replacing light bulbs or air-conditioning filters are up to the tenant. If major repairs are needed, discuss it with your landlord but be prepared to bear the cost yourself.
