Taxi

Inside the city, taxis are the most popular form of public transport. You can get these by flagging them down or heading to malls or hotels. Alternatively you can call the taxi operator TransAd directly and ask them to pick you up. They arrive quickly and you can ask them to remember your address as your home to make future booking even faster. The starting fee is Dhs.3.50 during the day, Dhs.4 after 10pm and Dhs.20 for an event pick up (although be aware of some unscrupulous taxi drivers you flag down not running the meter and trying to charge extortionate rates after an event). If you use the call centre add Dhs.3 during the day and Dhs.4 at night. Journey costs up to 50kms are charged at Dhs.1.6 per kilometre, or Dhs.1.69 per kilometre between 10pm and 6am. There is also a minimum fee of Dhs.10 for taxi rides in the evening period. Tawasul Transport provides wheelchair accessible taxis on request.

Airport taxis
When arriving in Abu Dhabi the new fleet of black airport taxis are there to pick you up. The vehicles include Mercedes Vito vans which are ideal if travelling with family. The flag fall is Dhs.25 for the vans or Dhs.20 for the Toyota Camry cars, which is significantly higher than the Dhs.3.50 for a regular silver taxi. However, silver taxis are banned from picking up from the airport apart from when there is an airport taxi shortage, so you have little choice but to pay. On the plus side, the drivers are said to be multilingual with good experience of Abu Dhabi, so you shouldn't have any difficulty getting to your hotel.
