Aerobics & Fitness Classes

There are plenty of places where you can raise your heart rate in group classes, from church halls for aerobics-style classes or swanky gyms for step sessions. Generally referred to as group fitness or group training, you’ll find classes offering dance, step, circuits, boxing or a combination of these, and more. Elements of yoga and Pilates are often integrated into classes.

A popular new addition is peloton-style cycle training, which is instructor-led interval training that simulates a bike ride up hills and down dales. Best of all, it happens indoors and there’s loud, inspiring music to keep you pedalling.

Most exercise classes take place in gyms and recreation centres (see Leisure Facilities), but check the noticeboards and newspapers for community classes, which may take place in any rented space, such as schools or church halls. Expect to pay between $10 and $15 for a casual class.
