Language Schools

The number of schools offering English-language courses has risen dramatically in the past decade. More than 1,200 educational institutions have signed up to the government’s Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, which provides a framework for minimum standards, good practice procedures and a complaints process. Information on the code is online at www.minedu.govt.nz. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA, www.nzqa.govt.nz) approves courses, and sets and reviews standards relating to qualifications and examinations.

Some language schools are standalone private institutions, but the government education system has also embraced international students, with numerous schools actively promoting their English-language programmes overseas. The quality of teaching is generally good and many courses include a recreational element such as skiing or sightseeing. An informative website is www.newzealandeducated.com.

Various other languages are taught at all levels in community classes. Keep an eye on the local paper near the start of each term. Universities and other tertiary institutions also offer specialist language courses and/or degrees.
