Astronomy
The Mackenzie District Council in the South Island is pushing for the night skies above the area to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Park. The move is designed to stop light pollution spoiling the magnificent, clear, star-sprinkled skies, but you don’t have to go down south to enjoy the Milky Way and Southern Cross. A useful website is www.astronomynz.org.nz, run by the non-profit Phoenix Astronomical Society.
