Natural Attractions

With the symbolic exception of the Seine, natural attractions are not Paris’ strong suite. Vantage points have been built on or landscaped, and even the superficially relaxed Parc Saint-Cloud has a thoroughly formal layout. But if you’re prepared to venture further, the 42,000 acre Forest of Fontainebleau (www.fontainebleau-tourisme.com) is genuinely scenic with its ravines, rock formations and verdant forest. It also has an extensive network of paths suitable for walking or cycling, as well as good opportunities for climbing. To the north, the 160,000 acre Vexin regional park (www.pnr-vexin-francais.fr) is similarly well endowed. During summer months, the region facilitates visits with a special bus connecting the RER stations of Cergy-Préfecture and Pontoise with some of the principal beauty spots.
