The world’s favourite monument attracted much criticism when it was built in 1889. Famously, Maupassant claimed to dine at the Eiffel Tower regularly because it was the only place where he was sure to be spared the sight of it. Since 2000, the tower’s shimmying night-time light show can be enjoyed from across the city, but from Trocadéro, the sight is transfixing.
