Finding Work Before You Come

Finding work before you come is advisable. All jobs require a valid work visa, and getting one requires a job offer. If you can’t get a job transfer, the best option is to scour ads for openings. Unfortunately, the employment sections of the country’s major papers are in Japanese only and recruitment agencies invariably want people who are in situ and have a work visa already. Japan’s two best-known English job-search websites (www.daijob.com and www.gaijinpot.com) are a good place to start, as is the English-language Japan Times website (www.japantimes.co.jp), and www.jobsinjapan.com. The American Chamber of Commerce Japan lists jobs (www.ecentral.jp) on its website, as does Metropolis magazine (http://jobfinder.metropolis.co.jp). See also Useful Websites on p.41. Opportunities vary according to sector. Finance, IT and education have the most jobs, followed by work as a teacher or a language assistant. See English Teachers to the right.
